Even hurricanes can rarely uproot this tree with its buttressed base and intertwined root system that allows it to resist some of the very strongest winds. This tree once dominated swamps in the southeast, with some trees living for more than 1,000 years.
The Bald or Swamp Cypress is a large deciduous conifer native to the southeastern US. It can grow to 80-130 ft (25–40 m) tall. The largest remaining old-growth stand today is at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary near Naples, Florida. Bald Cypress swamps are some of the world's most productive ecosystems.
The Bald Cypress is the state tree of Louisiana.
