Vitamin D's vital importance to our health is confirmed—and natural sunlight is its most efficient source. It is one of the most powerful healing therapies in the world…
Vitamin D boosts metabolism, bone health and it is believed to reduce multiple cancers, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, and ironically, skin cancer. (Sources: The Healing Power of Sunlight & Vitamin D by Dr. Michael Holick; http://www.vitamindcouncil.org). Studies suggest it might improve the survival rate for lung cancer.
Vitamin D deficiency is now epidemic across all age groups, affecting 40% of the U.S. population; nearly twice that for pregnant mothers. Of course, people should use common sense. Nobody wants to get skin cancer, but we’ve gone from sun worship to sun dread. Once again, the pendulum has swung too far. And people with dark skin need more sun time to manufacture vitamin D because the pigment in skin blocks ultraviolet rays. For example, African Americans need six to 10 times more sun exposure for vitamin D synthesis than people with fair skin.
Getting some sun may also shake off the wintertime blues: Research suggests that light hitting your skin, not just your eyes, helps reverse seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Moreover, being outside gets us golfing, gardening, and engaging in other types of physical activity.
