Scientists worldwide agree that the preserving and planting trees are among the cheapest, most effective means of drawing excess CO2 from the atmosphere. Trees also filter our water, stabilize our soil and provide food, medicine and wildlife habitat.
About half of the ‘greenhouse effect’ is caused byCO2.) One tree removes one ton per year; 30 trees per year will remove one person’s annual carbon debt.
The healing benefits of trees are well known, and more are discovered every year.
500 BC supports the United Nation’s Environment Programme (UNEP) and its Campaign to Plant 7 Billion Trees. This ‘Plant for the Planet’ Campaign asks all sectors of society to take small but practical steps to combat what is probably the key challenge of the 21st century by the planting of indigenous trees.
The Campaign is backed by His Serene Highness Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Professor Wangari Maathai. “In re-creating lost forests and developing new ones, we can address loss of biodiversity, improving water availability, stemming desertification and reducing erosion,” said Mr. Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNEP.
His Serene Highness Albert II, said: “To plant a tree for future generations is a simple gesture, yet a strong symbol of sustainable development.” Here’s what you can do:
- Plant a tree in your yard, even organize a planting in your community. Use our “Tribal Gatherings” tool to make it happen. Be sure to record your planting on UNEP’s website: http://www.unep.org/billiontreecampaign
- Donate to the Nature Conservancy or American Forests. Their scientists are managing reforestation programs around the world.
- Anything you buy from 500 BC’s Trading Post will result in a contribution in support of the “Plant for the Planet” campaign.
