Are the “I used to be a plastic bottle/bag” eco-bags better for the environment?
Boris: Not even expert boars agree which is a more eco-friendly way to carry home groceries. The best answer, of course, is neither: Bring your own cloth bags to the store. You can do it. I believe in you.
In an insightful Wall Street Journal article by Ellen Gamerman, we learned that most of the reusable, so-called “green bags” are made in Chinese factories, have limited or no recycled content and require about 28 times as much energy to produce as the plastic used in standard disposable bags (8x times as much as a paper sack).
Bottom line: Somewhat of a “mixed bag” (sorry). It is a FISH TALE that the bags are made of recycled plastic. But if you get one and reuse it time and again, then it beats the constant flow of garbage related to standard grocery store bags that can only bear one use.
